i agree with most of this, but you have to remember that Gillian Jacobs is gorgeous, and you know, thin, lanky, white, etc. if say, Shirley had Britta’s personality, she wouldn’t be as tolerated or loved by a general audience (which is not to say Yvette Nicole Brown is unattractive, because she is gorgeous, but not the “standard” beauty). i think Britta is a great feminist figure on tv, but she’s not an ideal one. she’s easy for white feminists to relate to because she is ignorant of her own privileges (which, personally, i think is good because Shirley will call her out on her ignorant, if accidental, racism), and that is sort of a problem. because if Britta can make ignorant remarks or actions and still get a free pass from the audience, then those who relate to her can, and will do so as well.

to its credit, the show does call Britta out when she’s being racist, homophobic, ableist, etc. through other characters (Shirley saying, “You can excuse racism??”, or being made a fool in the Valentine’s episode with Paige). the problem being that fans tend to just gloss over this, or immediately forgive her. and YES, she does have good intentions, and a heart of gold, and by god, she tries, but when an entire fandom can turn against Shirley for being religious and self-righteous (despite having just as good a heart), but will forgive Britta for all her flaws and prejudices, something is up. so i guess…i don’t have a problem with Britta herself, but this post b/c it’s implying that she’s the Best Feminist on current tv when she is not.

That headline made me giggle.

I like that Britta is a realistic character, especially in terms of, you know, being a white feminist. The reasons listed above are the reasons WHY I dislike Britta so much! She tries, though, and that makes her very redeemable. Shirley, however is my favorite of the female cast, and I really wish she was appreciated more.
